As part of the Terrible Torbay History Project, Year 6 visited Paignton library to learn about an infamous local character - John Lee. He lived in Babbacombe during the 19th century. The children researched information about him using a number of primary and secondary historical sources. Once they were back at school, they collected together the evidence that implied that John Lee was guilty and evidence that seemed to indicate that there might have been a miscarriage of justice. Working in pairs, they then wrote balanced arguments discussing the evidence and its implications. Children were encouraged to use an on-line thesaurus to up-level the quality of their vocabulary and I think that you will agree that some of them have done a fabulous job – clearly destined to have careers in the Law!
