Mental health and well-being

As a school, we recognise how vital positive mental health is for our children. We believe that good mental health is just as important as good physical health, in order for our pupils to be able to lead fulfilling lives, which is why we are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of all our pupils. We know that children who have positive mental health have improved attendance and punctuality rates, improved academic performance and a better understanding of healthy relationships.  We aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and resilience they need to manage their emotions, relationships, and challenges effectively. We also recognise the importance of early intervention and targeted support for pupils who may be struggling with mental health and well-being issues.

Mental health is taught in school through our explicit teaching approach in our comprehensive Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum, as well as assemblies throughout the year, and support from our Pastoral team and Mental Health Support Team (MHST).  We have a designated member of staff who has undertaken their Senior Mental Health Lead training and leads on mental health and well-being. We also work closely with our MHST to ensure that we are taking a proactive approach to supporting children's mental health and wellbeing by delivering workshops to key groups of students such as year 6, in preparation for their transition to secondary school. MHST also trains Mental Health Ambassadors in Years 5 and 6 who seek ways to improve the school's positive mental health approach.

Our MHST are running  'Decider Skills' in select year groups, with a view to this taking place for all children in the future. This is a programme based on cognitive behavioural therapy that teaches children emotional regulation strategies. By working with MHST, our students benefit from having access to professional support and practical tools to help manage their emotions.

We have created a range of interventions and support systems for pupils who may be struggling with mental health challenges, including personalised support plans which are developed by our Pastoral Team and referrals to external services.
